L. Ron Hubbard was an American author. He wrote fantasy and science fiction novels in his early work, and then Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health in 1950, promoting his dianetics technique; and later losing the rights to the book in bankruptcy. He founded Scientology in 1952, and the formal Church of Scientology in 1953; he managed the church until his death. What became the the Church of Scientology International, in Los Angeles, was founded in 1954. The Church of Scientology has come under significant government and media scrutiny since the 1960s. He was also known as LRH.

L. Ron was born in Tilden, Nebraska, the son of Ledora May (Waterbury) and Harry Ross Hubbard (Henry August Wilson). He was mostly raised in Helena, Montana, and also spent time in Asia and the South Pacific while his father, a U.S. Navy officer, was posted to Guam. He was himself an officer in the U.S. Navy in WWII, commanding two ships for a brief time.

L. Ron was married to Mary Sue (Whipp), until his death. He had two children with his former wife Margaret Grubb; one child with his former wife Sara Northrop Hollister, to whom he was bigamously married for a time; and four children with Mary Sue. He spent much time in the 1960s and 1970s on his personal fleet of ships, of which he was the “Commodre.” Beginning in 1975, he resided in seclusion on a ranch in the California desert, where he lived in a luxury motorhome. After his death, Scientology leaders announced that he had decided to “drop his body” and continue his work in another plane of existence.

L. Ron’s paternal grandfather was Samuel Wilson (the son of Joseph C. Wilson and Jane McKee). Samuel was born in New York, to Irish parents, his father from Co. Donegal and his mother from Co. Armagh.

L. Ron’s paternal grandmother was Harriet Jane Williams (the daughter of Charles Elijah Williams and Lois Ann Spencer). Harriet was born in Wisconsin, and was of Colonial American (largely English) descent. Charles was the son of Lloyd Williams and Anna Cardell. Lois was the daughter of Ethan Spencer and Rachel Johnson.

L. Ron’s maternal grandfather was Lafayette Owen Waterbury (the son of Abram DeWitt Waterbury and Margaret Metler). Lafayette was born in Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Michigan. Margaret was the daughter of John Metler/Medler.

L. Ron’s maternal grandmother was Ida Corrine/Corinne DeWolf/De Wolf (the daughter of John Archelous DeWolf/De Wolf and Louise Doty). Ida was born in Kane Co., Illinois, and was of Colonial American descent. John was the son of Charles DeWolf/De Wolf and Elizabeth/Betsy Putnam. The surname Dewolf is of Dutch origin. Louise was the daughter of Elijah Doty and Polly Hodges.
