His legal name has been Ye since 2021. He produced singles for prominent artists before turning to a solo music career, with a style often sampling traditional soul music; utilizing orchestras, synthesizers, and autotune, and partaking in Christian music and gospel. He founded record label GOOD Music; founded, and has been head of, creative content company Donda; and created clothing and footwear for Nike, Louis Vuitton, Gap, A.P.C., and Balenciaga, as well as Adidas’s Yeezy brand. His music has sold over 160 million records worldwide. He is also known as Yeezus, Saint Pablo, Yeezy, and Louis Vuitton Don.
He was The Birthday Party’s nominee for President of the United States in 2020. He was also an independent candidate for President of the United States in 2024.
Kanye was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and moved to Chicago, Illinois, with his mother at the age of three, living in Oak Lawn. His father, Ray West, was a member of the Black Panthers and a photojournalist, and is now a Christian counselor. His mother, Dr. Donda C. (Williams) West, who died in 2007, was a professor of English at Clark Atlanta University, and Chair of the English Department at Chicago State University. Donda raised Kanye as a single mother, and had stated that she raised Kanye to be a leader and to always be outspoken. He is a cousin of producer and songwriter Devo Harris and singer and songwriter The Wrldfms Tony Williams.
The name Kanye is an Igbo, West African name, and the name of a town in Botswana.
Kanye is married to Australian architect Bianca Censori. He has four children, including North West, with his former wife, television and social media personality, actress, socialite, and model Kim Kardashian.
Kanye is a devout Christian.
