Cody Chesnutt Facts

  • In September 2002, he released his debut album The Headphone Masterpiece and it peaked at #6 on the U.S. Top Independent Albums chart and at #128 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. Tom Moon, reviewing the album in Rolling Stone, hailed it as “one of the most emotionally raw albums of the year” and a record that “gathered musical strands from all over the pop universe into unadorned, remarkably intimate stream-of-consciousness musings on love, money, and responsibility”.
  • Cody Chesnutt was nominated for Shortlist Music Prize in October 2003 and performed in the ceremony for the prize at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
  • In 2005, he appeared in the documentary film Dave Chappelle‘s Block Party (also known as Block Party). The film and its soundtrack are dedicated to the memory of music producer J Dilla who died of lupus a month before the film’s release.
  • In 2020, Cody Chesnutt provided his vocals, from his song Parting Ways, as a street singer with a guitar in the computer-animated film Soul. The film stars the voices of Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Rachel House, Alice Braga, Richard Ayoade, Phylicia Rashad, Donnell Rawlings, Questlove, and Angela Bassett.
